Sex Ed 101

Sex education can be an intimidating topic to bring up with youth, but it doesn’t have to be! Use this infographic in your conversations and cover some of the most important topics.

Anatomy 101

  • Every body looks a little different. That’s normal!
  • AMAB (assigned male at birth) bodies have a penis and testicles.
  • AFAB (assigned female bodies) typically have a vulva, vagina, uterus, and a clitoris.
  • Some people have intersex characteristics, where a person’s biological sex characteristics do not fit into the typical assigned male or female categories
  • Bodies change during puberty. These changes might include things like voice shifts, hair growth, menstruation, breast development, erections, and wet dreams. It might feel weird, but it is nothing to be embarrassed about!

Key Facts

  • Curiosity is normal. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Questioning is how we learn and knowledge is a powerful force.
  • Sex is normal, healthy, and safe. But sex is not for children! Sex requires consent and children cannot consent to sex.
  • Sex is meant to be pleasurable, but sex can lead to pregnancy and sexually transmitted illnesses.
  • Masturbation, or self pleasure, is not sex. Masturbation is healthy and normal.
  • Sex involves the genitals, the penis or vagina. Sex can also involve the mouth or anus.

Consent Matters

  • Consent means asking for AND getting a clear “yes” before touching someone’s body or entering their personal space.
  • “No,” “stop,” silence, discomfort, and uncertainty, always mean no.
  • You have the right to say no to hugs, kisses, touching, or anything that makes you uncomfortable.
  • Healthy relationships respect boundaries. If someone pressures you, that’s NOT okay.

CONTRACEPTION

  • Sex can lead to pregnancy and STIs. It is important to know your options for contraception.
  • Condoms can prevent pregnancy and STIs.
Hormonal birth control can prevent pregnancy, balance hormones, and stabilize moods, but they will not prevent STIs.
  • Speak to a doctor about your options!
